What Is a DPF and Why Does It Block?
Your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) captures soot and ash produced during combustion. Over time — especially on short, stop-start journeys — the filter fills up faster than it can self-clean (regenerate), leading to a partial or full blockage.
Warning Signs Your DPF Is Blocked
1. DPF Warning Light
The most obvious sign is the DPF warning light on your dashboard — usually an amber symbol resembling a box with dots inside. This light means the filter is approaching capacity and needs a regeneration cycle soon. Ignoring it can lead to a more serious blockage.
2. Engine Management Light (EML)
If the DPF light is ignored, the Engine Management Light may illuminate alongside it. At this stage, the ECU has detected a fault and logged a DPF-related error code (commonly P2002 or P2003).
3. Limp Mode
Limp mode (also called 'limp home mode') is the vehicle's self-protection response to a severely blocked DPF. You'll notice a dramatic loss of power — typically limited to 2,000–2,500 RPM — making motorway speeds impossible. The car is telling you it needs urgent attention.
4. Increased Fuel Consumption
A blocked DPF forces the engine to work harder, burning more fuel in the process. If you've noticed your MPG dropping without a clear reason, a restricted DPF could be the cause.
5. Excessive Black Smoke
Unburnt soot escaping from the exhaust is a clear indicator that the DPF is no longer trapping particulates effectively.
6. Burning Smell
During a forced regeneration attempt, you may notice a hot or burning smell from the exhaust — this is the filter trying to burn off accumulated soot at high temperatures.
What Should You Do?
If you're seeing any of these symptoms, don't delay. A partially blocked DPF can often be cleaned; a fully blocked or damaged one may need replacing — which costs significantly more.
At Auto Guru, we offer mobile DPF cleaning across Kent and the South East. Our technicians come to you, diagnose the blockage level, and perform a professional clean — getting you back on the road without the dealership wait or cost.
